手稿是指用手书写的资料，广义而言，包括古代写于龟甲、兽骨、羊皮、植物、石头、蜡、泥板、竹简、木简、布帛、丝绸、纸张的书稿，中世纪及文艺复兴时期的圣经抄本、古典文抄本，以及现代的各类手写本，甚至打字稿。就其内容而言，则有信件、日记、备忘录、草稿、个人文件、家庭或机关档案、商业纪录、乐谱、文学作品、历史稿件等各类型的资料。这些文献多半未经大量复制，故流传不易。
