肝脏发炎，常由病毒感染，有时可由细菌或毒物所引起，肝炎一般可分为传染性肝炎及血清性肝炎两大类。前者又可分为急性型、亚急性型或猛暴性型，可导致死亡，肝脏细胞坏死。除非极为轻微，一般均有黄疸。此病由病毒引起，藉粪便之污染而漫延；血清性肝炎藉由注射污染血液，或血液衍生物或仅仅一注射针，取血针或其他污染而未经消毒之仪器等所引起。
