汉 魏 以来，大批农民因逃避赋役而流亡各地，被地主豪族荫占后，称为佃客、浮客、隐户、荫户等。
唐 宋 时户籍中并有主户、客户的区别。客户多指无地佃客。《晋书·王恂传》：“ 魏 氏给公卿已下租牛客户数各有差，自后小人惮役，多乐为之，贵势之门动有数百。” 唐 柳芳 《食货论》：“人逃役者，多浮寄于閭里，县收其名，谓之客户。”《宋史·食货志上一》：“ 真宗 景德 初，詔诸州不堪牧马闲田，依职田例招主客户多方种蒔，以沃瘠分三等输课。”
