我国特有的一种绘画体裁。供人们在过年时张贴，故名。
宋 代已有关于年画的记载。传统的年画，多为木刻水印，线条单纯，色彩鲜明，画面热闹；题材主要有五谷丰登、春牛、婴儿、风景、花鸟，以及封建迷信等。建国以来的新年画，在传统基础上推陈出新，丰富多彩，为人民所喜爱。 阿英 《年画的叫卖》：“年画棚就是专卖年画和其他花纸的。” 萧红 《马伯乐》：“仆人室里的圣像，一年要给他们换上一张，好象 中国 过年贴的年画一样。” 王汶石 《大木匠》：“她有一个女儿，名叫 桃叶 ，今年已满十八岁，出俏得象年画上的人物一般。”
年画是早期民间用于年节喜庆装饰的版画。早期民间为配合新年习俗，祈求吉祥，常以寓有吉祥意义的图案或版画做装饰。
