西方传说中会在圣诞夜降临，并送礼物给儿童的老人。古罗马时，每到元旦即用青枝绿叶和灯火装饰房屋，并向儿童与穷人赠送礼物。西元四世纪左右，基督圣徒尼古拉曾多次拯救儿童脱离灾难，而后，在德意志境内首先出现把尼古拉当作圣诞老人或新年老人的风俗。随后传到以基督教归正宗为主的国家，信奉归正宗的荷兰人到达新阿姆斯特丹（今纽约）后，用圣克劳斯代替尼古拉为圣诞老人。也称为「耶诞老人」。
