解释（名）我国佛教的一个派别，以静坐修行为主，主张不立文字，直指人心，见性成佛。相传南朝宋末（5世纪）由印度和尚菩提达摩传入我国。

佛教宗派名。又名佛心宗或心宗，以 印度 菩提达摩 为初祖。禅宗之名称始于 唐 代。由 达摩 而 慧可 、僧璨 、道信 ，至第五世 弘忍 门下，分成北方 神秀 的渐悟说和南方 慧能 的顿悟说两宗。但后世唯南方顿悟说盛行，主张不立文字，直指人心，顿悟成佛。禅宗兴起后，流行日广，影响及于 宋 明 理学。
《水浒传》第四回：“ 智深 不晓得禪宗答应能否两字，却便道：‘洒家记得。’” 明 徐渭 《次苏长公雪》诗之一：“翩如巾舞玉人纤，皎似禪宗戒律严。”
